"Places I've Been" Map

Back in the spring when I started following blogs I came across this great map that Jamie at C.R.A.F.T. created where she marked the places she has been.  Filed the thought away and decided that I wanted to do something similar.

Decided this weekend I would tackle it.  I had not lucked upon the cork board she used so I went with canvas, scrapbook paper and mod podge.  Hit my scrapbook paper stash and just happened to have some travel paper that I am sure I bought with the great intention of scrapbooking a trip we'd been on.....years ago.

I wanted to cut each state out and remembered that I had a magnetic US State puzzle that was about the size I wanted.  Now, if I had actually gone back and read Jaime's blog I would have discovered that there is a template you can print.  Oh well, hard = fun, right?

I then worked from left to right cutting the paper around the state magnet and laying them out over to the right so that I could keep up with the color pattern.  I also wrote the state on the back.  Yes, some things are obvious but I am not the neatest crafter and things tend to get mixed up.......

When I was finished cutting them out I mod-podged Texas on my 16x20 canvas and worked from there.  There were a few little bumps along the way but for the most part I was able to correct.  I also realized I was going to have to freehand Alaska and Hawaii.

I let it dry and then placed pins for the places that I have been.  I have it hanging in my office and love it!

Here are a few shots of the pins:

  1. it looks great - to maximise the use you get out of it - you should consider printing out the photo of the finished product, then cut the map out, and stick it on a treasure box where you can keep all the memorabilia of the trips you've made or want to make! x

  2. This is way cute! I like the paper you used! I'm a big nerd in that I like to stop at the visitors center at the place we visit...I wonder how this would look using brochures from them! Thanks for the inspiration...I might have to try this out!

  21. I'm a US map junky. I actually have the big magnetic one but I have a hard time finding the right magnets in some states. I will be adding Arizona this weekend. I've been to a lot of states, not all, and I haven't collected all the magnets for the states I've been to. I do have some magnets of states I haven't been to though. Still, creating your own map is a brilliant idea. Yours is awesome. Thanks for sharing!
